Geomodeler / Structural Geologist

Location Erbil
Discipline: Oil & Gas
Job type: Permanent
Published: 14 days ago

Petrogate is supporting a leading upstream operator in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq to appoint an experienced Geomodeler / Structural Geologist to strengthen their subsurface team. This is an office-based role in Erbil, supporting active producing assets and near-term development opportunities.

The Role

You will take ownership of structural interpretation and 3D static geological modelling, integrating seismic and well data to deliver fit-for-purpose models that directly support well planning, infill opportunities, and development decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain 3D static geological models in Petrel (structural framework, horizons, zonation, model updates).

  • Interpret 2D/3D seismic to define faults, horizons, structural styles, and compartmentalisation.

  • Integrate well data (logs, core, tops, drilling results) to refine interpretations and improve model fidelity.

  • Support subsurface decision-making for well planning, target maturation, and remaining-pay identification.

  • Work closely with geoscience, drilling, and production teams to ensure models are aligned with operational needs.

  • Produce clear deliverables and interpretations for internal stakeholders (maps, cross-sections, model outputs, uncertainty discussion).

Candidate Profile (Essential)

  • Proven experience building end-to-end 3D static models in Petrel (not just mapping/correlation).

  • Strong structural geology capability: faults/horizons, seismic interpretation, and structural framework building.

  • Upstream experience working with development teams on well planning / infill / sidetrack style decisions.

  • Ability to integrate multi-discipline data and communicate clearly with non-geoscience stakeholders.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology / Geophysics / Earth Sciences (Master’s/PhD advantageous).

Desirable

  • Carbonate reservoir experience.

  • Basic scripting/automation (e.g., Python / MATLAB) to improve modelling workflows.

  • Exposure to uncertainty workflows and scenario-based structural interpretations.

  • Experience in the Middle East / Kurdistan Region (advantageous, not essential).

Location

  • Erbil, Kurdistan Region of Iraq (office-based).

  • Local hire preferred (details to be confirmed during process).
